I cannot believe Firefly Wedding is almost here! I fell in love with this story when I started reading the manga, and I haven’t looked back since. When I learned there was an anime on the way, I stopped the manga (you know my anime before manga rule) so I truly have missed this story. As a result, I could not pass up the opportunity to watch the first episode early and share my thoughts with you all! Safe to say, this anime is about to be my entire personality these next few months.
About Firefly Wedding
Firefly Wedding is based on the manga by Oreco Tachibana. The manga is published in English by Viz and currently has 7 volumes available. The anime is produced by david production, the studio behind Fire Force and the new Urusei Yatsura adaptation. It is directed by Takahiro Kamei with series composition by Yuko Kakihara.
The story centers on Satoko Kirigaya, the daughter of a nobleman. She’s beautiful and has many eyeing her for marriage. Sakoto, however, is hiding an illness and knows she doesn’t have much time left. Yet, she will make sure she marries well to make her father happy. When Sakoto is ruthlessly kidnapped, she pleads with an assassin named Shinpei Goto to save her. She wagers the only thing she has, herself, to make it out alive.
Initial Thoughts
This first episode does an incredible job at introducing viewers to the rollercoaster experience that is Firefly Wedding. What starts off as a slow and somewhat funny introduction to Sakoto and her familial dilemma, quickly turns into a nightmare scenario. In a matter of 23 minutes, this first episode makes it crystal clear: this is a dark series.
Right away, I was blown away by the animation! Sakoto looks absolutely beautiful and as we meet her at home, the contrast between where the episode starts and ends only adds to the darkness. Once the episode hits the halfway mark, it transcends to another level. The artistic choices made to emphasis the direness of the situation and how Sakoto is processing everything are perfect. Certain moments gave me chills, that’s how good it was!
I’ll fully dive into this episode further once it’s official out in the next few so I can get into spoilers. But what I will say now is that if the entire season is like this, we are in for a TREAT! From the art, to the voice acting, to the depiction of certain moments, you can tell a lot of love and care has gone into adapting this. I can’t wait to follow this week to week!
