Yuru, Right, and Left are taking in the modern world as best as they can, while Dera and Hana try to come up with a plan for the current situation. Episode three of Daemons of the Shadow Realm starts answering questions while giving us more to think about.
Time of Truths
It’s time for Yuru to start putting together the pieces of what happened in the village and how that led him to the situation he’s currently in. He learns from Right and Left that about ten years ago, his father and mother left the village with Asa in tow. This answers my question from episode two about when Asa was replaced. Six years of being with his real sister, which means he’s known the “fake” Asa for longer. But at the same time, Asa had six years being by her brother and has spent these last ten years missing him and wondering about his safety. It breaks my heart to think of her so small and not understanding why she can’t be with Yuru, who she loves dearly. At least that’s what I think, we don’t know yet what she has known for all this time.
This confirmation also shows me that Yuru is carrying a lot of emotional weight surrounding his parents. “I thought our parents left both of us behind. But it was only me.” Whew, the silence, the clenching of the hands, and the pained looks on Right and Left’s faces say it all. While Yuru has been in the village this whole time, has he truly been as happy as he’s been acting? He resolves to track down Asa so he can learn where his parents are.
The Darkness
In this episode, we also get a little taste for some of the darker themes that are waiting for us down the line. Jin uses a daemon to take care of someone’s stalker and the visuals were grim. It makes me wonder if his side is using their daemons for contact work, like hitmen or bounty hunters. I don’t get complete “villain” vibes from that side of the world yet, so I’m curious to learn what it is what they do.
Overall
So far, I’m really enjoying everything coming out of this series so far. As I mentioned before, I’m trying to take each episode for what it’s worth and not thinking too far ahead. One thing I will say is that Yuru feels so much like a stranger and it’s hard to decipher what he’s feeling about everything. I did mention that parents part up top, but there is still so much left unsaid or not touched upon. The first episode was CRAZY and he’s basically time traveled in a sense from a remote village in the past to a modern life. All things considered, he seems so chill about it? I dont know, there is so much there not being said. But I can’t wait to find out.
Daemons of the Shadow Realm is airing weekly on Crunchyroll, with new episodes every Saturday.
