When a young woman who is down on her luck gets put on to a job by a friend, she has no idea it is in the sex work industry. While she isn’t a prude, Sono definitely has some thoughts about escort services and some preconceived notions about the women who utilize them. This random job might end up changing her mind.
About Do Women Need Sex Entertainment?
Do Women Need Sex Entertainment? is a manga series by Sono Yoshioka with art by Yachinatsu. The story follows a young woman named Sono whose life is falling apart. She’s almost 30, single, and lost her last job suddenly. When a friend recommends her for a new job, she jumps at the opportunity. Only to discover later that the job is doing admin work for an escort service that caters to women.
Despite her apprehensions and because she is out of options, Sono starts working at Honey Time and learning the ropes of this sex work industry. This includes being a model for training, talking with clients, getting to know the escorts, and so much more.
My Thoughts
I’ll admit, I was a little scared going into Do Women Need Sex Entertainment? Vol 1. I had no idea what Sono or I would be in for, and I wasn’t sure what the vibe was. Was this going to be a sexy story or a dark story? The reality was that this manga ended up being a more human look at the escort industry.
Like Sono, I think many have a skewed view of the sex work industry. In the United States, the selling of sex is illegal except in the state of Nevada. While people do partake in the sex work industry by choice, it’s an underground industry. In Japan, while the actual act of penetrative sex is illegal, other types of sexual acts are not. As a result, you have escort services.

All this to say, this realistic* portrayal of the ins and outs of the industry is refreshing to read. Some moments made me uncomfortable in a good way and challenged some of my personal beliefs. Other moments felt jarring in a “wow, I would have never thought of it like this” way. The perspective from a woman on why women would want or need these types of services is grounded. Sono isn’t perfect: she has many biases when it comes to this line of work. I think seeing her change her mind on some of her beliefs is important, and I’m glad we’re seeing it.
This all sounds very serious, but I promise the story is way more lighthearted and funny than I’m making it seem. Some parts made me laugh out loud, while other parts had me blushing, putting my iPad down to breathe. I’m looking forward to seeing more stories about Sono adjusting to working in this industry, her views on her sexuality, and wanting to find love. I also loved the stories of the women who pay for these types of services. I hope we see more of that, too. This was a great read, and I’m excited for the next volume.
*By realistic, I mean a portrayal that isn’t two of the top hosts falling in love and navigating that. I can’t speak to what is real in this industry.
