REVIEW: In the Twilight of Our Adolescence

“Feelings are very complex. When you like someone… there’s love, grief, jealousy, hatred, sadness… It’s a whole mix of emotions.”

About In the Twilight of Our Adolescence

In The Twilight of Our Adolescence is a boys’ love manga by Waka Hayashi and is published in English by TOKYOPOP. The story revolves around Yusei Tanahashi, a popular student who is secretly crushing on Tatsumi Nakagawa, a quiet and reserved student. The manga follows them as they grow to be friends, and soon enough, they are questioning if they can be something more. They both must navigate their feelings, pressures from their classmates, and what comes next.

My Thoughts

There is no other way to describe this story than special. In the Twilight of Our Adolescence is such a sweet and tender story, and it is so special. The characters are so real and vulnerable, at some moments it felt like I was reading someone’s diary. They’re not perfect by any means, but Waka Hayashi does an incredible job at portraying how complicated teen feelings can be. Not everyone does the right thing, but they are earnest in their intentions, and that makes a difference.

There are many interesting elements in this story, such as Tanahashi and Nakagawa being from different social groups and how they bond over a radio program. My favorite element of the story is Tanahashi’s friendship with Manami, a girl who likes him. There’s something to be said about how Tanahashi thinks he’s “sparing” her feelings by ignoring them, and instead, he’s doing more harm. Especially when he grows closer to Nakagawa and doesn’t know how to manage spending time with him and spending time with Manami and their other friends.

Overall, In the Twilight of Our Adolescence is an incredible story from start to finish. The characters are raw and human, and so lovable. I’m hoping we get a sequel one day with Tanahashi and Nakagawa in the future.
