REVIEW: Yano-kun’s Ordinary Days Episode 4 – My Crush

“Sitting at the park eating a snack with my crush’s crush”

A New Challenger Approaches

In episode four of Yano-kun’s Ordinary Days, Hashiba (the classmate I mentioned in last episode’s review) confesses to Kiyoko that he likes her. Initially, he tells her that he knows she likes Yano and to forget about it. Then, after spending some time with Kiyoko, he tells her not to forget it!

I really enjoyed this episode, which mostly focuses on Hashiba. He is adorable. Kiyoko and him are so alike, and he seems like a great guy overall. I think it says a lot about him that when he questions why Kiyoko likes Yano, he ends up hanging out with Yano to find out (after some light stalking, of course.) After their hangout, he realizes he does want to be Yano’s friend. The best-case scenario.

What About Yano

The question on everyone’s mind is, how does Yano feel about Kiyoko? Unfortunately for us, we’re not any closer to finding out. When Hashiba asks Yano, he says he is asking because he likes Kiyoko. Yano lets him know he’s been thinking of her as a friend this whole time. But his reaction feels off. Then, at the end of the episode, we see Yano with a weird expression on his face as he witnesses Habisha and Kiyoko talking in the classroom.

To me, it’s still a bit too early for Yano to like Kiyoko. Yano is just getting used to the idea of having friends and living a “regular” high school experience. He has been so guarded for so long, he doesn’t even know what friendship feels like. I think for him, he’s been so focused on Kiyoko trying to be his friend, he can’t process anything more than that. I do think or moreso hope, that Habisha’s crush on Kiyoko makes him consider his feelings for Kiyoko. But I know that he will need to make more friends to identify how these feelings are different.

I am loving the pace of this show and where it’s headed. As a friendship girly, I cannot wait to see Yano and Habisha deepen their friendship, and also for the friend group teased in the OP to form. Yano is slowly coming out of his shell, but he has a long way to go.
