About Seven Sundays
Seven Sundays is a manhwa series created by Charyeok and published in English by Ize Press. In it, we have Taeyang, a young hot firefighter who’s gone viral for his looks and a recent rescue. When his boss tells him that a local news station wants to do a documentary on him, Taeyang immediately says no until he learns which station it is. The station in question happens to be where his ex, Jiwan, works at. This ex famously ghosted him eight years ago and Taeyoung isnt quite over it. Upon reuniting, Taeyang learns his ex happens to have a seven year old who is also named Taeyoung! Taeyoung (the adult) tells Jiwan to give him seven dates to win him over so they can get back together.
My Thoughts
Seven Sundays is by the creator of Dirtiest High, another favorite of mine, so I knew I’d love this too. And I wasn’t wrong. Off the bat, Taeyoung stole my heart. He is one of my favorite types of main characters. He’s younger than the male lead and trying to take the reins in their situationship. I love when someone wants to take control but is really putty in their lovers hands. He wants to be with Jiwan no matter what, but he’s also not going to force it if that’s not what Jiwan truly wants. But what does Jiwan truly want?
It’s clear Jiwan genuinely liked Taeyoung. I mean, he named his son after him! The chapters in this volume give us a glimpse at some of what Jiwan is dealing with, which includes his parents rejection because he is gay. But he hasn’t vocalized any of this to Taeyoung, and is still being a bit secretive as to what led to their breakup eight years ago. Every time it feels as if Jiwan is letting his guard down around Taeyoung, he reels it in and pushes Taeyoung away. How many times can he push Taeyoung away before Taeyoung walks away for good?
Seven Sundays strikes the perfect balance of lighthearted and thoughtful. These are two characters who mean a lot to each other and despite the push and pull, deep down I think they both want to make this work. Taeyoung is patient (I mean it’s been eight years!) and willing to do whatever it takes to prove to Jiwan they can be together. And he’s already great with kids. Jiwan please, your perfect man is RIGHT HERE!! I’m hoping in the next volume we see Jiwan lay it all out and start letting Taeyoung in.
