REVIEW: Daemons of the Shadow Realm Episode 2 – Right and Left

After the bombshell that was episode one of Daemons of the Shadow Realm, I have been on pins and needles anticipating what comes next. Luckily for my heart and nervous system, episode two slows down the neck breaking speed. It allows for some levity in an otherwise tense world. This episode uncovers a bit of what we may have put together from episode one but still leaves a lot of questions unanswered.

Right and Left

When we leave off episode one, we briefly meet Right and Left, Yuru’s daemons. I, to no one’s surprise, am absolutely enamored with Left. First of all, I’m left-handed so I already am partial to anything left but second of all, she’s sooooo freaking hot. I love a strong woman who makes me question if I want to be WITH her or just be HER! But, I digress. In this episode, we get a feeling for who Right and Left are and so far, it feels like strong daemons with hints of bimbo behavior. They are ready to ride out for Yuru, despite Yuru feeling like he’s not their “master.”

Even with Right and Left, Yuru takes dealing with Gabby into his own hands. Yuru is clearly going through a lot but can remain levelheaded, even in the most dire of circumstances. I’m interested in seeing just how learning more about the “real” world and what is going on is going to impact him. It’s a lot to go from this village life with your “sister” to suddenly learning the world is modernized and your “sister” wasn’t really your sister.

Speaking of sister, even though we don’t know her and aren’t sure if we can trust her, I am team Asa! The eyepatch alone lets us know were dealing with a badass. But on top of that, she is so happy to see that her brother is alive and doing well. Whatever it is that she’s a part of, it’s clear that she just wants to reunite with Yuru for what she believes is the best outcome. We don’t know when Asa was swapped out, so how much of that love is from interacting with him or just from knowing he existed isn’t clear. Whatever it is, I’m on Asa’s side right now!

It’s Too Soon

I’ve titled this a review but with this type of storytelling, it feels way too early to feel anything concrete. I’m enjoying this ride I’m on and not trying to guess or overthink things. I appreciate flow of the story so far. I want to take it at face value, before the tinfoil hat I secretly wear pops out. Let me put down the red string and corkboard.

Regardless of what I know or don’t know, Daemons is super enjoyable. As I mentioned earlier, this second episode brings levity. We get a lot of humorous moments with the daemons and with the daemon retainers, Hara and Dera. I love the easy switch up between funny moments and serious ones. Each character we’ve met so far is charming and leaves me wanting to know more about them.

I love that as viewers (if we’re anime only), we are in the same position as Yuru. We will be learning right along side him what is going on and what his role in everything is. This makes Daemons so, so fun!
