About Comeback After Fate
Comeback After Fate is a boys’ love manga by Anji Seina, published in English by Kodansha. In it, we meet Eri, an alpha, who has just debuted in a new boy band. Although he’s new, he’s already making a splash in the idol world and is soon paired with a veteran boy band member, Sooyoung Lee, for a special performance. During their first practice, Eri gets a whiff of Sooyoung Lee’s pheromones, and learns he’s an omega pretending to be an alpha. This turns into a passionate one night stand where Eri gets carried away and bites Sooyoung Lee’s nape, essentially making them mates. They agree to move forward contractually until they can be un-bonded, but is that what they both want?
My Thoughts
I’ll admit, in real life I’m not very in touch with the Japanese/Korean idol scene. I missed the train and that’s okay. But as a result, I love stories depicting it! Even if they aren’t accurate, I wouldn’t know because I’m not involved. But there’s just something so fun about the added layers of celebrity, keeping things a secret, dealing with jealous bandmates, and the possible effect on the other bandmates.
Comeback After Fate heightens the excitement with the omegaverse layer, which made it all the more delicious to me! First of all, Eri being the cute and adorable, inexperienced alpha, while Sooyoung Lee is the experienced omega was perfect! I love a dynamic shift and I love when the omegas are the more experienced one. Of course, their chemistry is through the roof, as much as Sooyoung Lee wants to deny it.
What I appreciate the most about this story is the question the characters keep coming back to. “Is this instinct or is this more?” With omegaverse, the connection between alpha and omegas is primal, it’s inevitable. Body chemistry overthrows reason and the bodies react before the hearts do. But does that mean the connection isn’t as genuine, isn’t as pure? If the body knows before the heart does, does that mean the heart just needs a little bit more time to catch up? Comeback After Fate makes the exploration of this question and fate a joy to experience. I love that both Eri and Sooyoung Lee are struggling to determine what they mean to each other and if their connection is more than just instict based on their secondary genders. I loved this story and I’m wishing we could get more of Eri and Sooyoung Lee!
