For the Lovers: 5 BL Anime to Watch on Crunchyroll

It’s the season of LOVE! Valentine’s Day has always been my favorite holiday so in honor of that, I’ll be publishing love focused essays, reviews, and lists all month long! (Is 90% of what I do now love focused anyway? Yes, yes it is.) For the Lovers will be your go to for all love, all month long! Whether you need a deep dive on a fictional couple or what romance anime movie to watch this month, The Wonder of Anime has you covered.

Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?!

When an office worker gains the power to read minds, he would have never imagined that someone at work would be in love with him. Adechi is a 30-year-old office worker who becomes a wizard at 30 because he’s still a virgin! With this newfound power, he learns his colleague Kurosawa is madly in love with him. What is Adechi to do with these overwhelming thoughts of love??

Cherry Magic became an instant favorite of mine. I love office romances, especially when it’s between unexpected people. This anime also has a little bit of everything: a side couple, a fujo employee rooting Adechi and Kurosawa on, miscommunications, jealousy, dates, and more!

Cherry Magic! Thirty Years of Virginity Can Make You a Wizard?! is available in English dub and subbed.

Sasaki and Miyano

A BL obsessed second-year and a delinquent seeming third year probably don’t have much in common, but that doesn’t stop them from falling in love! In Sasaki and Miyano, Miyano is obsessed with BL, even if he himself isn’t gay. When he meets Sasaki, the two start connecting over BL. But when Sasaki starts falling for Miyano IRL, Miyano is suddenly questioning everything he knows about himself.

I can and have talked at length about my love of Sasaki and Miyano. It is such a beautiful series and one that I find myself revisiting time and time again. If you love that butterflies in your stomach feeling when watching two people fall in love, this BL anime is perfect for you.

Sasaki and Miyano is available in English dub and subbed.

given

Boys in a band, multiple couples, love triangles, dealing with loss, grief, chasing goals – given has it all! One of my favorite BL anime of all times, given follows the story of a boy band trying to make it big while learning about love, loss, and themselves.

If you’re new to given, this is the perfect time to join! There’s an anime, three movies, and an OVA, (all very faithful to the manga) all available on Crunchyroll!

The viewing order:

  • given (11 episodes)
  • GIVEN The Movie
  • given – on the other hand (OVA)
  • given The Movie: Hiiragi Mix
  • given The Movie: To The Sea

Love Stage!!

Love Stage!! is probably one of the funniest anime I’ve ever seen. Izumi is a nerdy otaku blessed to be born into a family of celebrities. After being forced to do a commercial, where he’s dressed as a girl, an actor named Ryoma sees him and thinks he’s found the girl he’s been crushing on since childhood. When Ryoma learns Izumi has been a guy along, he’s still determined to be with him.

I recommend Love Stage!! to everyone because while it is a product of it’s time, it is also a story that is so outlandish and whimsical, you can’t help but to root for everyone. It’s so wacky in a way older stories tend to be and it truly is enjoyable start to finish.

Love Stage!! is available subbed.

Twilight Out of Focus

Another BL anime with multiple couples? Yes, please! Twilight Out of Focus is another anime for those who love stories following different couples. There are three arcs in Twilight Out of Focus following three different couples who are all connected to a film club. Each couple is unique and fall into different “tropes.” Roommates, enemies to lovers, aloof x sunshine.

Twilight Out of Focus is available in English dub and subbed.
