Now that Yano and Kiyoko have confessed their feelings for each other, everything is smooth sailing from here on out…right? It wouldn’t be Yano-kun’s Ordinary Days if it were so simple. Episode 7 finds Yano and Kiyoko questioning what comes next and if it is as simple as “going out.”
What Does Going Out Mean
At the beginning of the episode, some classmates ask Yano and Kiyoko if they are officially going out, and both are stumped. Yano decides to ask Kiyoko out, but because she is unsure of what it entails, she asks Yano for some time to think about it. Back at home, Kiyoko’s little sister invites a friend over to advise Kiyoko.
I particularly enjoyed this sequence, as silly as it is for a high schooler to ask an elementary schooler for dating advice. But it goes to show that Kiyoko is severely overthinking it. She wants to talk to Yano and also hang out with him, but she’s trying not to come off as too eager or annoying. However, as her sister’s friend reminds her, if he likes her, he will want to spend time with her. With that in mind, Kiyoko returns to Yano and asks him out.
The Hashiba of it All
In Yano’s world, he is super excited to be going out with Kiyoko. This puts Hashiba, who genuinely wants to be friends with Yano, in an awkward spot. I find this dynamic interesting, and every episode, I love Hashiba a little more. He really does like Kiyoko, but is also rooting for her, and at the same time. He is also rooting for Yano, even if he questions whether Yano likes Kiyoko romantically. I think he’s worried about Yano misunderstanding.
I think Yano is a bit naive, but I also trust him and his feelings. In my review of episode 5 I mention that everyone is babying Yano a bit due to his clumsiness and also his lack of experience with friends. I believe that is also what is happening here. I wish Hashiba, Kiyoko, and the others would learn to trust in Yano a bit more, too. He knows his heart.
The Movie Date
After making their relationship official, Yano and Kiyoko go on their first date to the movies! It was such a cute date, but it made me so sad that Kiyoko spent the entire movie second-guessing the date. She was so worried that Yano would get hurt or not enjoy himself. I hope as the season progresses, Kiyoko can let go a bit and enjoy her time with Yano. He DOES get hurt a lot, but he’s used to it, and she should be too. He is going to get hurt. Enjoy what you can until it happens.
I’m excited to see Yano and Kiyoko moving forward in their relationship, and I’m ready to see them dating in this next chapter of the story.
