We are back in the world of YAN, and my god, does it feel like a completely new universe has been unlocked in just one volume. When I read YAN volume 1 a few months ago, I thought to myself, “damn, this is crazy!” But I thought that would be the end of the earth-shattering crazy, and we’d move into the “expected crazy” for this universe with volume 2. I’m happy to say, there is no “expected crazy” as the story continues.
Volume 2 of YAN picks up right where we left off in volume 1, with a crazy battle between Yan Tieh Hua and some huge robots. As I’ve come to understand with YAN, nothing is ever as simple as it seems. A new character is appears during this battle that adds a new, confusing piece to the puzzle. Did I also mention time travel?
With the time-traveler in tow, this ragtag group of weirdos – Yan Tieh Hua, Detective Lei, Miku Higa (the teen protegy who can see the future), and him, all must work together to figure out why they are all connected and who is behind these giant fighting robots?
YAN volume 2 keeps the momentum from volume 1 going and triples it. At no point does the story feel slow or boring. There are a lot of different elements, but slowly but surely, things start making sense. You can start making connections and see the larger picture behind these people and the weird things going on. But just as you’re getting comfortable, a new twist threatens to shake what little you know so far.
YAN reads like an action movie- it’s high-paced and intense. Volume 2 has only added to the story and upped the ante and intrigue. I can’t imagine what happens next, but I’ll be sitting at the edge of my seat waiting to find out.
