About Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami
Unexpectedly Naughty Fukami is a boys’ love series by Ayaka Matsumoto, published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. It centers Kaji, a hot man who is the talk of his office for his good looks and charm. He’s turning down dinner invites left and right because he’s secretly gay. Not only is he gay, but he’s the definition of a fuck boy: only interested in hook-ups who are hot, rating people by their attractiveness, and quick to ghost.
When Kaji ends up being stuck overnight with a developer from his company, Fukami, he’s not even bothered. Who would be interested in this ugly and frumpy straight guy? But when Fukami comes out of the shower and his hotness is revealed, Kaji loses his mind. They both discover the other is gay and immediately hook up. Kaji is confident this is a one-night stand but now he can’t stop thinking about this “total zero.”
My Thoughts
There’s so many things I love about this story so far. For one thing, I love how indifferent Fukami is and how much that is killing Kaji as he starts developing feelings for him. Being that Kaji is the KING of hookups and superficial relationship, I love that his “zero” is the one who completely ruins him. Yes actually, you do deserve to grovel and suffer for being such a superficial jerk. It’s so fun to watch him realize his feelings and the lengths he goes to fight them.
The other point I love is how sex is used. Yes, it is hot to look at. But in a story like this, starting a relationship at the place where most people work towards to adds a different element of yearning. When you’ve already had someone’s body, can you easily make it into their heart? As we watch Kaji start developing feelings for Fukami, and falling deeper after every sexual interaction, we notice that these feelings bleed outside of the bedroom. He’s seeing how cute Fukami is and how much fun they have together. He’s even getting jealous when other people notice Fukami’s good looks.
Next, we have Fukami. I love how confident and outspoken Fukami is. Even though he’s initially “frumpy looking,” he can take control with Kaji and has him wrapped around his finger. We don’t have Fukami’s POV yet, but we can also see him letting his guard down and opening up to Kaji.
It’s easy to walk into this story and expect there to be an uneven ratio of plot to smut: I mean the word naughty is in the title! But if there is one thing this first volume lays the foundation for, is that you’re going to get an equal amount of both. Which, for a story like this, matters. The smut is smutting and it’s hot. But it’s also useful: each intimate moment pushes the narrative further and explores these characters in different ways. Sex between Kaji and Fukami has seemingly opened the doors, but will they both be able to walk through them? I can’t wait to find out.
