The White Cat’s Divine Scratching Post is a danmei novel series by Lv Ye Qian He, and it is published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. Lv Ye Qian He is also the author of The Wife Comes First: Qui Wei Shang, which I reviewed last week.
This is a xianxia story that follows Mo Tianliao, a demonic cultivator who is known for forging highly coveted spiritual weapons. In his life, he has a white cat he adores named Pawpaw. When a group of religious sects band together, they kill him. Then Mo Tianliao’s soul wanders for centuries, until he’s able to possess a divine tree and is essentially reborn. Back in the world in a body, Mo Tianliao seeks an orthodox sect to join and is quickly taken by a mysterious leader named Qingtong.
My Thoughts
As a danmei newbie, this is my first foray into an xiaxia story and the cultivation world. Admittedly, it was a little hard to understand everything in the universe, and I had to reread certain parts until I learned. However, the story does a great job at explaining things, and there is also a glossary that provides more information.
That being said, the heart of this story is soooo cute. At every point, I was blushing, giggling, kicking my feet in glee. Mo Tianliao is obsessed with his cat, and the lengths he goes to shower him in affection are so cute. Meanwhile, Pawpaw acts so cold and aloof, but is equally obsessed with his human. Their interactions made my teeth hurt from how sweet they were.
This story is also hilarious, especially as a reader, when you start putting pieces together before Mo Tianliao does. There were so many moments that were so absurd, I was screaming. I was counting down for the moment Mo Tianliao starts putting together the things we as the reader know, and when he does figure things out, it is so satisfying.
As a lover of all things cat, I knew I would instantly be charmed by this story. Just look at the beautiful cover by Bakuten! The interior illustrations are also an incredible sight to see. Pawpaw is such a fun and sassy kitty, and his inner thoughts had me laughing out loud at several parts. I devoured this book because it was just so good. I can’t wait for the next volume to get more Pawpaw!!
