REVIEW: The Demon King is Way Too Overprotective! Vol 1 – Bring Back the Yanderes!

Yanderes. You either love them or hate them, but truth be told, they make a romance story interesting. The crazy passion that is scary (but also hot??) is fun to read. You don’t know whether to root for them or hope a second lead swoops in to save the day. When the yandere in question is a Demon King set to reuinite with his fated love, the reincarnation of a Holy Saint, you’re in for quite a ride.

About The Demon King is Way Too Overprotective!

The Demon King is Way Too Overprotective! is by Miko Senri and is published by Seven Seas Entertainment. In it, Seina Yamada is a high school girl going through a tough time. She’s essentially an orphan – her parents passed when she was young, and her only caretaker, her grandma, recently passed away too. She lives on her own and works various part-time jobs and day gigs to make enough money to cover her rent.

One day, as she’s about to be scammed by a weird older man, a young guy dressed in weird clothing saves her. He proclaims himself to be the Demon King and declares he’s been traveling through realms to find her. Seina is said to be the reincarnation of the Holy Saint, and they were together in a past life. The Demon King instantly declares he will be living with Seina. Seina is apprehensive and scared, but she’s also lonely and drawn to Damon (the name the Demon King uses).

Throughout this first volume, we watch Seina navigate her feelings towards Damon as she works odd jobs to make rent and also attends high school. Damon is at times clueless and cute, but other times his demon nature kicks in, and he is intense and possessive. Seina tries not to get swept away, but it may be too late.

My Thoughts

This first volume moves so fast I felt whiplash. Seina is immediately drawn to Damon, and finds herself letting her guard down agaisnt better judgement. So far, I can’t tell if it’s her loneliness driving this or if its her soul, due to their past lives connection. While I am wary, it’s not a total dealbreaker for me. Seina is falling already BUT she also is putting her foot down and isn’t totally swept away.

Damon is giving yandere vibes for sure, but his switching from innocent puppydog to intense guard dog makes it hard to determine his real side, for me at least. He feels a tad bit insecure (I mean I get it, you been traversing realms to find your soulmate and she doesn’t even know who you are in this life) and needy. But then he swiftly finds the switch to be possessive when Seina is being kind to others. I do enjoy yandere characters, but I need them to be fully commited to the yandere 100%. Less puppydog and more crazy.

Miko Senri’s artwork is incredible and makes reading the story feel like looking at a magazine spread of cute characters. Both Seina and Damon are drawn so beautifully, and looking through Miko Senri’s social media pages, you can see how much she loves these two by the way she draws them. The art alone makes me excited for more of them.
