REVIEW: Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! Episode 1 – A Jerky is a Promise: Skatzbitt

LISTEN! I know the word “Milady” draws particular image to your mind! But don’t let this word keep you any longer from one of your new favorite romance anime of the Fall anime season. I learned about Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! during the Crunchyroll showcase at Anime NYC this year. I initially recoiled at the title (as would any millennial seeing the word ‘MILADY’ in the year 2025), but as soon as I saw the preview, I knew this anime was going on my list.

About Pass the Monster Meat, Milady!

Pass the Monster Meat, Milady! is based on the light novel by Kanata Hoshi with art by Peperon. It has also been adapted into a manga by Chika Mizube. The manga is available in English from Kodansha. The anime is produced by Asahi Production (A Galaxy Next Door) and is available on Crunchyroll.

The story is about the daughter of a count, Lady Melphiera, who has gained a reputation as “Voracious Villainess” because she loves eating monster meat. Her family is insisting she get a fiancé or she’ll be sent to a convent. But due to her reputation, she hasn’t found anyone. That is, until she meets the “Blood-Mad Duke.” Aristide Rogier Du Galbraith is a duke who slaughters monsters and has his own bad reputation. The two meet when Duke Galbraith saves Melphiera from a beast, and sparks fly between them.

My Thoughts

There is so much to like about this anime from episode one; I don’t even know where to start. I’m not one to usually like old adventure or royal-type stories, so I was caught off guard at how much I enjoyed it. While the setting is “olden timey,” the dialogue and actions feel fresh and modern.

Melphiera

What’s not to like about Melphiera? She reminded me of my friends and me immediately. She LOVES food, and she’s clearly very knowledgeable about beasts and monsters. The way she doesn’t let people’s thoughts about her stop her from doing what she loves? She’s THAT GIRL for real. I love it when a main character is strong in who she is and doesn’t let others’ opinions dictate her life. And that rumoured nickname, “Voracious Villainess”? It’s actually really cool.

The Mad-Blood Duke

Obviously, I was going to like the male lead just by his hair color alone. White/silver-haired guys are always 100x hotter. In this first episode, the Duke was the perfect balance of cool and quirky. His little quirkiness was on full display when he realized how beautiful Melphiera is, and it makes him nervous!

Chemistry

Melphiera and the Duke’s chemistry was on fire from the start. They both instantly clocked how beautiful the other one is and right away challenged the rumours they’d heard. When they both left the banquet to go to the Duke’s estate, I knew it was a done deal between them. I am ready for their monster-slaying and monster-eating dates now.

What’s Next

I’m not entirely sure what the vibes are yet. Will it be a more episodic, monster of the week type show where every episode they encounter a specific type of beast and cook/eat it together, or is there a larger plotline the season follows, and there will be obstacles in their way of being together? Either way, I can’t wait for episode two, and I’m ready to root these two on.
