My Ex-Boyfriend Loves Boys’ Love! is a manga series by Mugiimo, published in English by Square Enix Manga & Books. When Momo is at a bookstore after work picking up a BL doujin, she’s shocked to see her ex-boyfriend Suzuya. They dated in high school and Momo basically ghosted Suzuya when she accidentally left her BL manga at his place. This BL manga ended up being the catalyst for Suzuya becoming a fundashi (male BL fan). With this secret now out in the open, Suzuya and Momo reconnect and together with Momo’s friend Yukine, the three form an “otaku alliance” to fan out about BL together.
My Thoughts
As a fujoshi and a lover girl, I was into this story based on the title alone. Will these two exes reunite based on their love for BL and live happily ever after?! I admit, I let my imagination run wild without reading the synopsis fully. To my complete surprise and delight, the shared interest of BL isn’t leading these two exes to run into each others arms just yet. Where it’s actually going is a place much sweeter.
My favorite part about this manga is how it highlights how beautiful it is to be a part of fandom. Momo creates doujinshi, her friend Yukine writes fan fic, and together with her ex Suzuya, they love all the aspects of the fandom. They create a little “otaku alliance” of sorts and spend their lunch breaks talking about BL, their favorite doujin artists, tropes, and shopping plans for Comiket. They also have so much respect for their favorite creators in the BL space, it’s so much fun to see!
Although I don’t write fan fic or create fan art, I definitely consider myself someone who contributes to the fandom space with The Wonder of Anime. Reading this story made me feel SO seen. The post con dinners, the staying up all night working on a review, the excitement of meeting your favorite creators in the space and giving them their flowers. My Ex-Boyfriend Loves Boys’ Love! gets everything about this experience right.
This is only the first volume and I’m already obsessed! Not much happens in the potential “second chance romance” arc as Momo herself puts it, BUT I’m sensing a little bit of it resurfacing. The little crumbs are there, I swear it!! We also have some potential tension with some secrets Momo and Yukine are keeping from Suzuya, so I’m excited to see that play out too!
