Fox and Puppy is a boys’ love manga by Nayuta Nago, published in English by TOKYOPOP. Nayuta Nago is also the creator of Star and Hedgehog, which Fox and Puppy is a spin-off from.
Aiichiro is the newest editor assigned to the famous novelist, Akihiko. Akihiko is a great writer, but sloppy in his personal life. When Aiichiro walks in on Akihiko with another man in bed, he confesses his love to Akihiko. Akihiko thinks Aiichiro is confusing admiration and love suggests that they sleep with each other. This will clear up Aiichiro’s “confusion” and the two can still work together. Little does Akihiko know this will make Aiichiro fall for him even harder.
My Thoughts
Another story of “work ethics be damned” and I’m eating it all up. The editor and writer relationship is a close one, so of course, adding a potential romantic relationship makes things complicated. It’s also because of this dynamic that Akihiko does not initially take Aiichiro’s confession seriously. He knows Aiichiro is a professional who loves his job and now, he has the opportunity to work with his favorite writer. Who wouldn’t be excited? Aiichiro also does a great job and Akihiko works well with him so he doesn’t want to lose that.
It’s easy to paint Akihiko as someone who is taking advantage of Aiichiro’s feelings to get what he wants. However, as the story progresses we see the way his past relationship is influencing his decisions now. Akihiko may believe he’s just using Aiichiro sexually, but it’s plain to see how much he’s craving the love and care Aiichiro gives him.
It can’t be overstated how incredible Aiichiro is. He truly is the “puppy” of Fox and Puppy. He’s inexperienced, but he’s filled with so much love and respect for Akihiko and that drives him. When he has the opportunity to be in a three month “situationship” with Akihiko, he lets Akihiko know that he won’t be sleeping with him and will pursue him romantically. When Akihiko pushes Aiichiro away, Aiichiro refuses to give up. Aiichiro’s young and relentless love is exactly the type of love Akihiko needs to help him heal.
