If you’re in the boys’ love manhwa community, there is no way you haven’t heard of DEAR. DOOR. As an older series, it’s one that a lot of people credit with getting them into BL and/or BL manhwa. I had tried reading the series before, but admittedly, had not been able to get past the first chapter. There was just A LOT going on. Luckily for me, it has been adapted for print, and now that I have tried again, I am hooked!
About DEAR. DOOR
DEAR. DOOR is a BL manhwa series by PLUTO, and it’s being published in English by Seven Seas Entertainment. The story begins when a cop named Kyungjoon is investigating suspected cult activity and ends up in the middle of a ritual. Out of nowhere, a demon named Lord Cain appears and marks Kyungjoon as his “door.” This sets off a series of events, and now the two must work together to figure out what is going on with all the demon activity.
My Thoughts
As I mentioned earlier, I’ve tried to read this DEAR. DOOR multiple times. There is just A LOT going on in those first few chapters. The art style is also different than most BL manhwa I’ve read. The demon parts are drawn so eerily: it’s creepy and intense. Reading it in book form definitely made things a bit less confusing since I could just flip between pages to reread certain scenes. Once I was able to do that, the story started making a lot more sense to me.
After getting past the scary demon stuff, I was instantly charmed by Lord Cain. In his human form, he is so HOT. And on top of being hot, he is hilarious. I love it when a lead is sexy and funny. He’s naturally a goofball, and the contrast of the scary stuff he’s involved in with his attitude is so good. There’s still a lot of tension between Cain and Kyungjoon (understandability, when a demon claims he needs to pleasure you to travel between Hell and Earth) so I’m curious to see when the tides will start changing.
This first volume also sets up some interesting things to be explored further. We have Kyungjoon’s best friend, Jinyoung, who’s been secretly in love with him for years. Cain’s assistant, Sid, who’s acting weird, and the unmarked door tattoos are wreaking havoc on Earth. I honestly cannot tell where this story is headed and what’s behind all this, but now that I’ve met Cain, I am down to find out.
