Being a magical girl sounds fun, right? Pretty clothes, awesome transformations, and a cool celestial sidekick. Sign me up! But I imagine it can’t all be sunshine and rainbows. I’m sure after doing it for so long, you’d get tired of it. Enter Pretty Pretty Please I Don’t Want to be a Magical Girl.
In Pretty Pretty Please I Don’t Want to be a Magical Girl, Aika is a 15-year-old girl running away from something. She’s excited to start high school and be a normal girl. She meets Zira, and the two quickly become friends. Before they get too comfy, Aika’s archnemesis, Eclipse, shows up and causes Aika to transform and reveal that she is a magical girl! Hijinks ensue.
The show’s written and directed by Kiana Khansmith, a director and storyboard artist. It enlisted a star-studded cast to bring these original characters to life. Anairis Quiñones (My Hero Academia) is Aika, Bennet Abara (Boruto) voices Zira, and Aleks Le (Solo Leveling) voices Eclipse. Christine Marie Cabanos voices the adorable Hoshi, Shara Kirby voices Lady DeVoid, and Michelle Knotz voices Miss.
The pilot is incredible and makes me want a full 25-episode season of this show, ASAP! In only 11 minutes, it manages to showcase just how brilliant and talented Kiana Kahnsmith is. The writing feels new and refreshing while leaning into some typical tropes of this type of medium. Aika and Zira are instantly likable, and their chemistry is great. I loved Zira being super into magical girls and living her best life once Aika’s secret is revealed. Also, Eclipse is just great as an archnemesis.
With over 1,500,000 views and 15,000 plus comments, I am not alone in being captivated by Pretty Pretty Please I Don’t Want to be a Magical Girl. Not to mention all the praise the pilot is receiving across all the social media networks. I’m not sure what Kiana’s plans are for the show, as this originally was a personal project, but I am hoping that somewhere a big network is watching and decides to fund this (if she wishes to go down this path).
