It’s still a few months away, but January is going to be a great month for anime! Netflix has announced that a new original anime movie will premiere on the platform on January 22, 2026. Cosmic Princess Kaguya! is inspired by The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, one of the oldest folktales in Japan. The movie is the feature film directorial debut of Shingo Yamashita, who’s previously known for directing the opening sequences for Jujutsu Kaisen Season 1 and Chainsaw Man.
From the trailer, we can tell this movie is going to be an experience. Stunning colors and animation take over the screen, and it complements the music perfectly. The animation is produced by Studio Colorido (Penguin Highway, A Whisker Away) in collaboration with Yamashita’s Studio Chromato. The beautiful characters are designed by Hechima (The Idolmaster Gakuen) and Akihiro Nagae (Drifting Home).
Some big players are involved in the soundtrack as well, including key figures from the Vocaloid scene. The soundtrack features music from ryo (supercell), kz (livetune), 40mP, HoneyWorks, Aqu3ra, and yuigot. The song in the trailer sounds incredible, so I can’t wait to hear the rest.
