All Eyes on You – Mateo Toro

Last year, I created the “Who to Watch” list, which spotlighted 16 creatives or entrepreneurs from Reading, PA. In honor of the new list approaching, I followed up with the 2018 class to see what they’ve done since we started watching them.

How has your company/ brand/ you grown?

I couldn’t be more excited about my company and what I accomplished this year. I have a better understanding on my company’s mission and the work I want to be doing more of. I have definitely grown, not just as a business owner, but personally. I am doubling down on doing more of what I love, in order to inspire others to do more of what they love as well.

What did you accomplish this year?

This year I accomplished being self-employed for an entire calendar year. I started taking photography serious in February, and I can confidently call myself a photographer now, and am proud of the photos I have taken. I worked with some amazing organizations in Reading such as: Rize, Barrio Alegria, Olivets Boys and Girls club, and many more. I was even was hired by my Alma mater, Penn State Berks. However, my biggest accomplishment was teaching mobile photography this Summer to Reading High students at RACC. A truly humbling experience and something I never thought I would do.

What is the biggest lesson you learned?

The biggest lesson I learned in 2018 is summed up perfectly from a quote by Michael O’Bryan, Director of Youth and Young Adult Programs at the Village of Arts and Humanities, “Your job as a teacher is to get your student addicted to their own successes.” I single handedly believe in that and it resonates true with me

Has your “why” changed?

My why hasn’t changed at all!

What’s next for 2019?

I am very excited for 2019! I am releasing my first coffee table photography book! The book will include my best, unseen photos that I captured during my trip in Cuba. (The Wonder of Ivy readers will get a discount when the book releases!)  I also want to produce a documentary! Lastly, I want to take an apprentice under my wing, teach them everything I know about videography and photography, and hopefully hire them as my first employee at the end of the apprenticeship!
